Merionethshire, known in Welsh as Meirionnydd, is a historic maritime county in North West Wales, framed by the rugged coastline of Cardigan Bay and the soaring peaks of Snowdonia.

It is often described as the most mountainous county in Wales, characterized by its “wild and romantic” scenery, deep glacial valleys, and the vast expanse of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), the largest natural body of water in the country.

The county’s origins are rooted in the ancient Welsh kingdoms of Gwynedd and Powys. It was formally established as a shire in 1284 following the Statute of Rhuddlan after the conquest of Wales by Edward I.

Throughout the centuries, Merionethshire remained a bastion of Welsh culture and language, resisting anglicization more fiercely than many of its neighbors. Its history is physically marked by the imposing Harlech Castle, which stands on a sheer cliff face and was the site of a seven-year siege that inspired the famous anthem, “Men of Harlech.”

In the 19th century, the county was a global powerhouse for slate production, centered in Blaenau Ffestiniog. It was also the site of a minor gold rush in Dolgellau; even today, Welsh gold from the area is traditionally used for royal wedding rings. The county is also the heartland of the “Great Little Trains of Wales,” including the Ffestiniog Railway and the Talyllyn Railway, the latter being the world’s first preserved railway.

The county has a fascinating history with wireless communication. In 1914, the Marconi Company built a Long Wave receiver station in Tywyn, which worked in tandem with a transmitter station in Waunfawr to provide some of the earliest transatlantic wireless telegraph services to New Jersey.

Today, the region is a prime location for amateur radio due to its challenging and rewarding topography. The high peaks provide excellent vantage points for VHF/UHF operations, while the coastal areas offer unique opportunities for “sea level” QRP (low power) work. Whether it’s operating from a guest house with a roof-mounted vertical or flying a kite-mounted antenna 200 feet above the Snowdonia foothills, the county remains a vibrant hub for the hobby
